China city to build leading hydrogen vehicle base

February 13, 2019

Abstract : The city of Changshu in east China's Jiangsu Province plans to promote the development of the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle industry together with Japanese carmaker Toyota as the country is encouraging more investment in new energy vehicles.

NANJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- The city of Changshu in east China's Jiangsu Province plans to promote the development of the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle industry together with Japanese carmaker Toyota as the country is encouraging more investment in new energy vehicles.

Changshu plans to establish a hydrogen vehicle industrial cluster with an annual industrial output of 100 billion yuan (14.8 billion U.S. dollars) by 2030, the city government said.

According to a hydrogen vehicle industry development plan released Monday, the city aims to build a batch of public hydrogen fuel stations and replace some buses, and logistics and sanitation vehicles with the hydrogen-powered vehicles by 2022.

It will also attract research and development institutes from home and abroad.

Before 2030, the city aims to build the industrial cluster, including carmakers and parts suppliers, into a technological innovation center to lead the industry development and increase its annual industrial output to 100 billion yuan.

Located in Changshu, Toyota Motor R&D Center (China) Co., Ltd. started its hydrogen fuel cell car experiments in late 2017 to test the performance of its Mirai hydrogen electric car. The center also built a hydrogen fuel station in Changshu.

Besides Toyota's technologies, the city is well equipped with various automobile and car parts companies and has an annual hydrogen production capacity of more than 100 million cubic meters, the city government said.
