Denmark plans artificial islands near Copenhagen as industry site

January 10, 2019

Abstract : Denmark has unveiled plans to build an industrial park consisting of artificial islands south of Copenhagen by the year 2040 to attract companies and boost employment.

Denmark has unveiled plans to build an industrial park consisting of artificial islands south of Copenhagen by the year 2040 to attract companies and boost employment. The project titled "Holmene" (small islands) will create one of the largest, most sustainable and innovative industrial zones in northern Europe, the government and the Hvidovre commune said on Monday.

Some 12,000 jobs are expected to be created on the islands. Brian Mikkelsen, former Minister of Economics and now director of the Danish Employers Association, told the TV 2 channel that a "European Silicon Valley" could emerge.

The project is aimed at bolstering Denmark's standing in the international competition for attracting companies, Interior Minister Simon Emil Ammitzboll-Bille said. Economics Minister Rasmus Jarlov pointed out that in the surrounding region of Copenhagen there was a lack of space for industry.

"It is extremely important that we work to strengthen the framework conditions for growth and development in the capital city region," he said. The project would be an engine of growth for all of Denmark.

But it will take some time for the project to be realised. The first ground-breaking is foreseen for the year 2022, with the "Holmene" islands to be completed in 2040.
