The situation for tech founders in Germany has improved, in the opinion of IBM's Germany head Matthias Hartmann.

"I think that Germany has slowly but surely woken up when it comes to the start-up scene," Hartmann told dpa. "We are getting significantly more capital into this area."

After the sale of its PC division to Lenovo in 2004, the IT corporation has become much less visible for normal customers. But Hartmann emphasised: "I do not consider that we have withdrawn from Germany."

The company had announced this year the hiring of around 2,200 new employees in the German-speaking market, after years of job cuts. Germany-wide, IBM employs around 10,000 people.

The US corporation returned to growth in 2018 after several weak years. "We also accomplished this in Germany, Austria and Switzerland," Hartmann said.
