BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) – The ship channel expansion and upgrade project of Zhanjiang Port in south China’s Guangdong province has been recently approved by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), according to Zhanjiang Port Group Co., Ltd.
Under the project, Zhanjiang Port will broaden and deepen its existing 300,000-ton channel, which requires a total investment of 3.866 billion yuan.
As the key port under the Belt and Road Initiative, Zhanjiang Port’s annual cargo throughput has seen rapid growth of more than 10 million tonnes since 2008. Its cargo throughput is expected to reach 300 million tons in 2018, according to an official from Zhanjiang Port Group.
Currently, Zhanjiang Port has owned four berths each with more than 300,000 DWT, and the number is expected to be six or seven by 2020.
It is noted that as China’s first self-designed modern deep-water port, Zhanjiang Port also has the shortest water routes from the Chinese mainland to Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe and Oceania. (Edited by Jiang Feifan, Hu Pingchao)
