Delays in restructuring Germany's energy grid are weighing on the country's switch away from nuclear and fossil fuels to renewable energy.
Of the 7,700 kilometres of new power lines required, only 1,750 have been approved and just 950 actually realized, according to the Federal Energy Grid Agency.
The grid agency said it was not keeping up with the rapid expansion of renewable energy production.
The agency and the Economy and Energy Minister Peter Altmaier are due to unveil plans for speeding up the expansion of the energy grid in the former West German capital of Bonn on Tuesday.
The plans require new power lines and projects to upgrade the exisiting infrastructure.
Germany plans to shut down its last nuclear power station by 2022. As replacement wind production is concentrated primarily in coastal areas, thousands of kilometres of new power lines are required to transport the energy to the main industrial centres in the south and south-west.
Two major new multibillion-euro power-line highways are due for completion in 2025.
