Chinese company to upgrade key highway in Ukraine -- A state-owned Chinese company Sinohydro Corporation Ltd on Nov. 28 signed an agreement with Ukraine's state road agency Ukravtodor to upgrade the Kiev-Chop highway, which connects the capital of Ukraine with the city on the Hungary's border. The contract, worth about 42.3 million euros (about 50.16 million U.S. dollars), was signed in Kiev by Xu Fei, Sinohydro representative in Ukraine, and Slavomir Novak, an acting head of the Ukravtodor. Under the document, the Chinese company will modernize a 22.3-kilometer-long section of the highway near Ukraine's northern city of Zhytomyr, expanding the road from two into four lanes in one direction.

Chinese steel giant to invest USD2.13 bln in mega Bangladesh-China project -- A leading Chinese steelmaker will invest 2.13 billion U.S. dollars in a mega Bangladesh-China project, according to a press release from the Bangladeshi side on Nov. 29. Two Memorandum of understandings (MoUs) were signed in Bangladesh capital Dhaka between Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA), Chinese Yunnan Yongle Overseas Investment Co. Limited and Bangladeshi Star Infrastructure Development Consortium Limited.

Belgrade-Budapest railway construction starts -- Work to modernize and reconstruct the Belgrade-Stara Pazova segment of Belgrade-Budapest Railway started on Nov. 28. The 34.5 km-long segment, the railway's first part to start construction, is expected to be completed in three years. The segment in Serbia, with an investment of 350 million U.S. dollars, was kicked off at a ceremony at Zemun railway station in Belgrade.

Chinese built industrial park to start operation in northern Ethiopia -- Kombolcha Industrial Park (KIP), in Ethiopia's northern Amhara regional state will start production in February 2018, an Ethiopian official said on Dec. 6. The industrial park built at a cost of 90 million U.S. dollars by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) on 75 hectares of land was inaugurated in July 2017. Azmeraw Dejene, project coordinator at KIP, said the installation of machinery and training of employees was needed before it became operational. Once operational, KIP is expected to employ 20,000 employees attracting textile and garment firms from the likes of China, U.S. and South Korea.

High-speed railway links major west China cities -- High-speed rail line linking northwest China's Xi'an and southwest China's Chengdu went into operation on Dec. 6, slashing the travel time between the two cities from about 11 hours to just 4. The first high-speed train left Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province at 8:22 a.m.. It will make 14 stops before reaching Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province. With a designed speed of 250 kph, the train will reduce the travel time between the two cities to four hours and seven minutes. The travel time will be further shortened to just three hours 27 minutes at the end of this year.

Construction begins on general aviation airport in central China -- Construction has begun on a general aviation airport in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province. Covering an area of over 30 hectares in the city's Caidian District, Caidian General Aviation Airport will provide landing and takeoff services for pilot training, low-altitude sightseeing, aircraft flight testing, emergency rescue and air patrol, said Peng Qiaodi, head of the district. Construction began from Dec. 1 and will be completed by the end of 2018. The airport is expected to begin operation in 2019.

Taihu Cocoa to invest industrial park in Osun, Nigeria -- China’s Jiangsu Wuxi Taihu Cocoa Food Co., Ltd. (Taihu Cocoa) and Nigeria’s Osun State government have entered into an agreement on building an industrial park in Osun, according to Nigerian media report on Dec. 1. Under the agreement, the industrial park would cover an area of 200 acres with a total investment of 216 billion Nigerian Naira (about 600 million U.S. dollars). The industrial park is expected to break ground in January 2018. The first phase of the project includes six sub-projects, which are cocoa bean processing, chocolate and food processing, salt processing, tapioca processing, gold mine and power plant.

China-Uzbekistan gas pipeline new control centre breaks ground -- The groundbreaking ceremony of the new control centre for China-Uzbekistan gas pipeline has recently taken place in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, marking the beginning of another key cooperation project between China and Uzbekistan in Belt and Road construction. As part of the line C of China-Uzbekistan gas pipeline project, as well as the management and command hub of the entire project, the centre will monitor, control, schedule and manage the pipeline, to effectively improve pipeline operation and control.
